The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology within the Faculty of Management and General Studies is one of the highly regarded departments of the University. It started its journey in 2004 and the department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Our department is a lively hub of teaching and learning where students are given focused attention. The vision of the department is to create an academic environment where learners would be self-motivated to learn, and enjoy the courses of Sociology & Anthropology (SOA) with the intent of applying the knowledge for national development and in particular the development of the society’s members.
Students pursuing a sociology and anthropology degree will study human societies, the formation of their structure and the ways individuals and social groups relate to one another and how social institutions evolve. The subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from crime to religion; from divisions of race, gender and social class to a shared belief of a common culture. The study of sociology and anthropology is vital to the understanding of contemporary issues such as poverty, crime, mental illness, marriage and family life, urban growth and the organization and delivery of human services.
Students will get practical field based research experience in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The department strives to provide an academic experience that enables the graduates to apply their knowledge and skills in practical contexts that relate to society and its members. Students are provided with a solid foundation for a variety of careers, from public service employment to employment in development sector.
